BOOKS: We'll no doubt post more fire truck-related books in the future, but these are the ones that we're very into right now... My son can't get enough of Curious George. I have to admit that I get really tired of reading all the monkey hi-jinks, but he loves him so much that I can put up with the endless George stories. So Curious George and the Firefighters by Margret and H.A. Rey is a favorite of my little guy. He also adores Richard Scarry stories. So he delights in the rescue attempts of Chief Smokey and the gang in A Day at the Fire Station as well as The Busiest Fire Fighters Ever!. And finally, I can't post this without mentioning how we appreciate the dramatic illustrations in Tibor Gergely's classic Golden Book, Fire Engines.
ACTIVITIES: Box Fire Truck -- We just happened to have a rainy day, the craft box out, and this small red box that had onetime housed Christmas treats. So I started cutting. I took the bottom half, which was white, and cut a third of it and taped it to the top of the red box. Then I cut out some circles from black construction paper for wheels. My son got busy with the glue stick and markers. 
We taped on a ladder, and then my son had to add googly eyes. And then he asked for silly teeth. It was a very quick project that provided us with a very cute boxy, smiley, fire truck. My son named him "Snozzle" and plays with him among the other toy fire trucks.
Fire Station Tour: What could be better than an actual visit to the local station? When meeting the firefighters my son could barely contain himself. He was star-struck. He was fascinated with the truck, the suits, the helmets, the boots, etc. Get the neighborhood moms and kiddos together and call your local station to set up a group tour. It's really worth it. Even with a group of two-year-olds.
