Don't you just love it when a book gives your child an immediate inspiration for art? My kids are always seeking items other than paper to color on. (My 17 month-old is fond of the walls, of course.) After checking out this book from the library, we had to rush out to collect some rocks and make our own rock people.
BOOK: We borrowed Rockheads by Harriet Ziefert from the library. The kids were very interested in the fact that the characters were made from rocks.ACTIVITY: Rock Faces: Simple, simple simple. My sons gathered some rocks outside, which was a fun activity on it's own. Then we brought them in and just colored them with markers. They did about 5 each before getting tired of it. And my three-year-old has asked to do this one again several days later.
