Shopping with Mama

BOOK: For anyone who has experienced the toddler meltdown in the grocery store (that is all of us, right?), you will appreciate this book. What's better is that my children, who have had such meltdowns, really appreciate this book, too. And I love that all of these llama books are so fun to read aloud. We really enjoy this story about a mama who's got to get things done, and her little llama who is just not having fun on the shopping trip. Check it out: Llama Llama Mad at Mama by Anna Dewdney.

ACTIVITY:
Shopping List Collage - After reading this book today, we also got our local grocery advertisement in the mail. My two year old is especially fond of assisting me with grocery lists and talking about all of the foods we should buy at the store. I figured the boys would enjoy making a visual grocery list, too.

The kids went through the newspaper ads and chose food photos that they wanted to add to their "list". I cut out pictures and gave them each their pile of wishlist foods. (Yes, there were a lot of cookies.) Then the boys glued their photos to construction paper.

Afterwards, they wanted to compare "lists" and talk about each other's food choices. This led to a nice discussion about the food pyramid, by the way. And was a good way to start a conversation about nutrition.

  2. I just read this - and what a fantastic idea! Shopping trips have certainly become more difficult in the older toddler years (for us at least!)
